The first Special Comment I saw (World Trade Center site), I nearly wept. Not because of the tragedy of 9/11 for which time has helped strengthen me against the pain and turn me to resolution to do the right thing... no. I nearly wept because I saw someone speaking directly, honestly, intelligently, and dissentingly against the Bush adinistration -- ON THE TELEVISION! FINALLY! Five years after 9-11, someone with power (i.e., access to mainstream media) is speaking up about the blind patriotism that has been spoon fed to us for so long. Not only is he intelligent and inspirational, he's entertaining too.   The only thing I don't like on Countdown is the nightly segment on gossip issues. I could care less about Brittney & K-Fed. Mr. Olbermann is the only "news person" on TV (I cannot in good conscience list Stewart and Colbert as journalists, but do admit that I learn more from them than most people apopearing on TV) who dares to say the emperor has no clothes.  Bill Moyers or Lou Dobbs would be the closest second. What's been missing over the past five years have been people who gave voice, and took some risk, to open their mouths and tell the truth -- directly, elequently, forcefully; consistently... and not only in a five-second sound bite, or an arch but careful comment from Mike Wallace.   There was no one. We all knew how bad and how disassociated from reality much of the country had become. How teflon these creatures who are destroying our country seemed; nothing seemed to touch them. And the MSM went right along -- never asking questions. Promoting their fog of illusions. Even with the murderous disaster of Katrina, the anger and righteous criticisim of this hideously disconnected and incompetent gang didn't last more than a few news cycles...  Then, in the most unlikeliest of places, that same MSM -- Keith Olbermann spoke up in a crystal clear voice and delivered unvarnished analyses of The American Tragedy we are still living through.   (The fact that he had been doing so on MSNBC since the Peevish Dullard was appointed president, questioning the farce of the Florida vote counting, then 2004 in Ohio, may not even have been known by all that many in this country -- so Olbermann is hardly jumping on someone else's bandwagon. Among too many self-important network commentators without courage or integrity, he's an original.)  More important than anything else, Kieth Olbermann's commentary gives others an example, and the courage to speak up. And that is the best antidote to a sense of isolation, and the myth of the invincibility of this pack of criminals.   Olbermann keeps telling America that the Hand-Puppet in the White House has no clothes. Now, people can see it -- and every time Keith speaks, more can see it.  NBC: There isn't a price that can be put on the level of integrity Kieth Olbermann has demonstrated. You can't buy the Truth. Countdown is the only TV show I watch. It's a "date." My only must see TV.  I turn the TV on just before 8:00 PM, making sure the mute is on so I don't hear a single word from Tucker Carlson, listen to Countdown, and press the OFF button as soon as Keith says "Good Night." If I have to miss the early show I try to see the midnight repeat.  I do wish that MSNBC would get their transcripts up in a more timely manner. My mother celebrated her 80th birthday this past Monday.   She had to scrape enough money together to hand sew a dress so that she wouldn't look "poor" when her class went to see "Gone With the Wind" in 1939 (she was 13). She drove a laundry truck, bussed heavy automat trays and stuffed dill in pickle jars on an assembly line during WWII, while taking stenography classes (she didn't have the luxury of wealth for college). Lived through the spectre of McCarthyism, the fear of the Bay of Pigs (but not so scared that she didn't start her family at the age of 36). Witnessed the horrors of Vietnam. Put plastic on windows and closed off some of the rooms in our home during the energy crunch. Managed to put three girls through college and pay for it.   She votes every election, and yes, she is a Roosevelt Democrat.  She called me after Keith's special comment tonight.   "I've never seen a journalist speak such truth in such a manner. Like everyone else who took the time to write something on this blog, I too am grateful to have someone like Olbermann on the air as a counter balance to the overwhelming number of right wing biased talking heads on TV. Even though NBC is owned by GE, a megacorporation, it is still a publically traded megacorpoation. If the number of viewers for Keith are better than the competition, then NBC is making more money on advertising for their shareholders. That's the whole point of commercial TV. If NBC were to pull "Countdown" for political reasons then they are truly stupid people. Once again, Keith Olbermann has done a great job of giving a voice to those who believe that journalistic and political integrity are slipping. Maybe they always have been.
